Fondazione Santagata, in partnership with “The Phoenicians’ Route – Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” is conducting a significant research project focused on the traditional knowledge and techniques related to the sea and navigation in the Mediterranean.
Context
This initiative focuses on the artisanal production of boats, a heritage that traces its roots back to the shipbuilding traditions of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. The goal is to document how these historical practices and knowledge have evolved and been shared among different Mediterranean cultures.
The project is part of an international documentation effort promoted by the Syria Trust for Development, highlighting the global importance of preserving this intangible cultural heritage.
Research Objectives
The research aims to produce a comprehensive document on the current state of techniques and knowledge related to the sea and navigation in the selected areas. The main objectives include: document how traditions are maintained and practiced within local communities, examine the current measures taken to preserve these traditions and identify the major challenges in transmitting them to future generations, analyse the main obstacles and difficulties faced in preserving this heritage.
Project Phases
To achieve the project’s goals, the research will be divided into the following phases:
- Selection of Research Areas: Identify the Italian regions along the Mediterranean coast that will be the focus of the study.
- Identification of Cultural Assets: Recognize the demo-ethnoanthropological assets associated with the cultural element under study, especially those already registered at national or regional levels in the pilot areas.
- Engagement with Local Communities: Gather information through meetings and interviews with local communities to better understand their traditions and cultural transmission.
- Collaboration with Institutions: Work closely with institutions to document the safeguarding initiatives and assess opportunities for cooperation and support.
