Fondazione Santagata, commissioned by the Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” has initiated a research and analysis project aimed at producing the study “The Value of Conservation and Restoration” to mark the Center’s 20th anniversary.
Context
The Centro Conservazione e Restauro, housed in the 18th-century former Stables and Riding School of the monumental Venaria Reale complex, was established in 2005 as an institute for advanced training and research in cultural heritage conservation and restoration. Its founding members include the Ministry of Culture, the Piedmont Region, la Metropolitan City of Turin, the Municipality of Turin, il Municipality of Venaria, l’University of Turin, la Compagnia di San Paolo e la Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino.
In early 2018, the Center began updating its strategic direction, resulting in the 2018–2022 Strategic Plan, developed with support from Fondazione Santagata for Cultural Economics, as a guiding framework.
In 2025, as part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations, the CCR aims to launch a research initiative to explore the value generated by its diverse restoration activities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to analyze the value chain of conservation and restoration within the cultural heritage sector.
Objectives
The research seeks to examine the value of conservation and restoration from multiple perspectives, including social and economic dimensions, with a particular focus on the profession of restoration. The study adopts a multidimensional approach that considers cultural significance, contributions to economic and social development, and employment impacts. Additionally, it aims to define the overall influence of the CCR on the community, the region, and the international context.
Expected Outcomes / Impact
The project aspires to deliver meaningful insights into the value of conservation and restoration, with a focus on economic and social aspects and the role of the restoration profession. By identifying and analyzing the specific phases of the value chain, the research will shed light on the broader implications of conservation and restoration efforts.
