Fondazione Santagata, in partnership with GAI – Associazione per il Circuito dei Giovani Artisti Italiani, and with the contribution of Compagnia di San Paolo, promotes a survey on “Emerging careers and independent cultural production in Italy”

How have artistic and cultural careers transformed into the field of contemporary creation? Can the mechanisms for inclusion/exclusion of the under-35s be identified from the economic circuits of art? What are the new ways of economic production and economic sustainability? What is the role of artistic planning in urban transformations?

These are the challenges that the survey wants to investigate, in continuity with what has been done over the years by the GAI network, the Compagnia di San Paolo and the Fondazione Santagata, in order to contribute to the general debate on the issues about artistic careers and contemporary production, collecting requests and suggestions from artists and operators, for the formulation of adequate responses in terms of policies and concrete actions.

Fondazione Santagata carries out the research in collaboration with GAI – Associazione per il Circuito di Giovani Artisti Italiani, and thanks to the support of Compagnia di San Paolo.

The proposed survey aims at studying at a national level, with regional and local focus, emerging artistic scenes and independent cultural production through three main analytical dimensions:

  • transformations in the role and careers of artistic and cultural professions;
  • new organizational forms and models of cultural and artistic production;
  • role of artists and centers in urban transformations.

The project is carried out according to some modular phases of work and consecutive steps of progress involving emerging artists and creatives, independent centers of cultural production, training institutions, institutions. The survey is developed over 18 months through discussion groups, quantitative analyzes, pilot researches, dedicated presentations to arrive at a final report to be conveyed through publications and industry channels.

The actual mapping can be implemented in the future with the extension of the survey in other Italian cities and/or with the opening to the international scene.

As part of the information gathering phase, artists and/or creatives were requested to take part in a questionnaire aimed at investigating artistic education courses on a national scale.

The questionnaire is addressed to artists under 35 of all disciplines, who live and/or work in Italy, who are performing or have completed periods of education/training or further education in the arts and culture in the last 5 years.
