In Italy there are 15502 libraries and 99 archives. Nowadays we are surrounded by digital books and documents and the world sees it as a key choice. Italy instead is not following this path since is missing a global digital project. The digital phenomenon started at the beginning of the 90s and in this paper are presented a briefly history and its main strong and weak points. In Italy libraries are becoming cultural centres (Turin and Milan are the main cases) but reading is still a gap for the country (the library loan per inhabitant in Italy is four times below the European avarage). This data tell us that the accessibility to books and digital contents can be seen as a new policy to make grow the number of readers in our country.
