The Damascene Rose. From Syria to Turin is a cultural project stemming from the collaboration between the Royal Museums of Turin, the Fondazione Santagata for the Economics of Culture and the Syria Trust for Development with the aim of promoting Syria’s rich cultural heritage through the lens of the iconic Damascene rose.

As the war rages around them, a small group of archaeologists, museum curators and attendants struggle to preserve the monumental collections of antiquities at the Aleppo National Museum during the Syrian conflict. For years, these women and men will bid farewell to their families every morning before heading to the museum under a hail of shells, facing sniper fire, often sleeping on the ground of the museum for several days in an attempt to accomplish their mission.

Journalist Carlo Cerrato interviewed Syrian historian and writer Sami Moubayed in an exploration of the Damascene Rose in Syrian literature as a symbol of beauty and cultural heritage.

Houmam Saad, Deputy Director General of Antiquities and Museums in Syria, addressed the disastrous effects of the Syrian conflict on the country’s cultural heritage, focusing on the importance of culture in post-conflict social and economic reconstruction.
