Management plan for the “Appian Way. Regina Viarum” site

The Ministry of Culture has commissioned Fondazione Santagata to draft the Management plan of the “Appian Way. Regina Viarum” site, within its nomination process to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

CONTEXT

The Italian Ministry of Culture has begun the process to have the Appian Way in its integral route from Rome to Brindisi included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

In this context, the Ministry has entrusted Fondazione Santagata for the Economics of Culture to draft the Management plan of the “Appian Way. Regina Viarum” site to attach to the scientific documentation for the nomination in January 2023.

GOALS

The Management plan is going to be structured as a “voluntary and participatory” strategic planning on the territory, aiming at efficiently safeguarding the heritage’s value and ensuring the right balance between conservation, sustainability and development, through sustainable activities which will contribute to the socioeconomic development and the quality of life of the communities.

WORK PHASES

The drafting of the Plan will carry out in 5 phases, from June to November 2022:

  1. Context analysis and data collection (mapping and analysis of the site’s resources, stakeholders and ongoing projects; socioeconomic analysis; evaluative summary)
  2. Consultations and participatory process (consultations with the organizations involved in the candidacy; local focus groups and interviews; youth engagement; workshops and dissemination)
  3. Drafting of the Management Plan (analysis of the literature and benchmarks; building of the action plans; drafting of feasibility and monitoring plans)
  4. Drafting of the Governance Model (identification of the organizations to include in the management; identification of governance processes; identification of the legal form)
  5. Drafing of a Monitoring System to evaluate the results (monitoring checklist; progress meetings; intermediate reporting)
