Fondazione Santagata is contributing, on behalf of the Alliance for Socially Engaged Arts, to research on the ecosystem of Socially Engaged Arts (SEA) in Europe and the policy and funding landscape that shapes the sector.

The research aims to map the field, understand its practices, impact, challenges, and needs, and provide data to guide policies, support, and visibility for the sector.

Context

This research takes place at a time when the role of culture and creativity in system change is both at risk and more urgent than ever. Socially engaged arts bring together artists and communities to address social, political, and cultural issues through creative, participatory practices. Rooted in co-creation and participation, these practices foster dialogue, perspective shifts, and positive social transformation.

The study focuses on the Council of Europe member states, involving a variety of organisations and practices to represent the breadth and depth of the sector.

Objectives

The research has two main objectives:

  • Recognize SEA organizations across diverse European contexts for their contribution to social impact, policy, and systemic change.

  • Better understand the SEA ecosystem to support its ongoing development.

Expected outcomes

  • A final report published in 2026, including analysis and recommendations for the sector.

  • A tool for reflection, planning, and advocacy for public and private actors.

  • Increased understanding and recognition of the SEA sector across Europe
